I am an artist
who specializes in painting with transparent watercolors in a soft and
delicate style.
Growing up in the countryside of my native Germany, I developed a fondness
for the beauty of nature that is expressed in my paintings. With great
sensitivity to moods and light, I created realistic renditions of my subjects.
I use watercolors in their true transparent nature, creating highlights
by letting the white of the paper shine through.
Before moving to the United Sates, I studied art at the Kunstschule in
Hamburg, Germany, then painted in Chicago, Illinois, under the guidance
of George Mally (A.W.S.). Moving to Northern Virginia, I continued my
art education and then painted independently to develop my own strongly
individual style.
I am an artist member of the Virginia Watercolor Society. I have won numerous
awards for my work and have participated in many solo shows, the most
recent at the National Wildlife Federation Gallery of Art. I was also
a top print-seller at the National Zoo Arts Festival and the Southern
Maryland Festival and have illustrated books for Westview Press.
My picture, Cherry Blossoms with Jefferson Memorial in the background,
was designated the official 1997 Cherry Blossom Festival print and was
sold at the memorial by the Parks and History Association. This print,
as well as my paintings of the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial,
was featured in the U.S. Capitol Historical Society gift catalog. In addition,
my picture Chickadee on Dogwoods was selected as a National Wildlife Federation
Conservation Edition and has appeared in several of their catalogs.
I
also use watercolor to create peaceful images of songbirds native to the
Mid-Atlantic region and Americana.
My painting of a sunlit girl blowing a bubble was described in the press
as, "altogether charming and a textbook perfect example of how to
handle the difficult medium." My prints are distributed nationwide.
My many customers include: H. George Caspari, Inc., the Hadley Companies,
Nordstrom, PRC, Lufthansa, Airbus, the German and the British Embassies,
the Congressional Federal Credit Union and, in Virginia, the Fairfax County
Park Authority.

This is a painting of a red-bellied woodpecker. A bird found commonly
in the east and midwest.

"Autmn Rest" Watercolor Print Is A Scene From Artist's Backyard.

A pair of cardinals is sitting on fall colored dogwood branches. A scene
taken from my yard, the bright red male is the most conspicuous, while
the female is less noticeable and blends in with her surroundings. They
are resting between an active summer of raising young and the hardships
of the coming winter.

to create peaceful images of songbirds native to the Mid-Atlantic region
and Americana.
This Robin visited my patio in search of a meal. His rust colored breast
complimented the clay tones of my flowerpots, as he emerged from under
the begonias and lobelia.

One of Riva's favorite sights in spring is a bluebird
in a flowering dogwood tree.
Here the artist has captured the delicate blue of the bird's feathers
against the pure white of early spring dogwood blossoms.

A springtime view of the US Capitol in Washington D.C., is shown with
its beautiful plantings in the foreground.
The blooming dogwoods and early green foliage are lit by a midday sun
with the dome of the Capitol in the background, a memorable Washington
scene.

In its familiar red, the male cardinal is set among red
mountain ash berries, a favorite winter food.

The beauty of the female cardinal is not often noticed. I highlighted
its subtle colors and gentle expression and placed it among red mountain

Cherry Blossoms

The splendor of blooming cherry trees surrounds the Jefferson Memorial,
and is reflected in the tidal basin. This lovely scene was selected
the official print of the Washington DC Cherry Blossom Festival in 1997.
The painting lent itself perfectly to the unique techniques of transparent
watercolor. I used gentle washes, leaving the white of the paper as
highlights.

Chickadee and Raindrops : Watercolor Print : $95.00
A mood scene inspired by a photograph that I took.
The beauty of the birch tree with glistening raindrops against the gray
background caught my attention. The fleeting stop of a chickadee highlighted
the moment.
